Song Suggestion: My Kiddo Loves Motown

What kind of music do I play for my charges? Good music! My current charge LOVES his Motown, and his favorite is Mary Wells' "My Guy." When it comes on the radio (set to the Oldies' station), he stops what he's doing and starts bouncing up and down to the beat. It's truly adorable.

The kid's got good taste.

About Melissa Marah

Melissa Marah is a unique singer/songwriter. She began performing when she was 9 years old, playing her own piece on flute at The Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. She continued playing flute until she was 17, when her high school orchestra teacher taught her a few chords on a guitar. The flute sadly collected dust from that point on, and Melissa convinced her parents to buy her George, an acoustic guitar, for Christmas. Melissa and George have been inseparable ever since.

In 2002, Melissa was attending college in St. Louis, and mentioned to a few musician friends that she had attempted to write a song. Hearing this, they took it upon themselves to force Melissa up on stage at an open mic, where she nervously performed “Only Physical.” She was pleasantly surprised at the accolades she received from friends and strangers alike. From that point on, she became a regular fixture in the open mic circuit in St. Louis, and eventually in Chicago, where she booked multiple shows and continued writing music.

Melissa’s music has been compared to Aimee Mann, Jann Arden, and fellow Chicagoan Liz Phair. She has an original, somewhat humorous, spin on the usual songs about unrequited love, bad blind dates, and, of course, getting dumped. She quickly developed a small following at her shows, pushing her to write more songs.

Recently, Melissa moved to Los Angeles and recorded her debut EP, which is now available on Amazon. She has performed in Venice, North Hollywood, and West Hollywood, CA, and has been looking forward to playing all over LA.
